Construction on the Hwy 156 Corridor Improvement Project reaches completion of Stage One this week as new pavement has been laid in both eastbound and westbound lanes.
Caltrans will be temporarily closing a short section of Union Road, between San Juan Hollister Road and Hwy 156 for approximately eight weeks, with work expected to begin between mid- and late August.
To accommodate the traffic delays, temporary traffic control devices will be installed at 4th Street and Hwy 156, and San Juan Hollister Road and 4th Street/Business 156.
Additionally, a new right turn lane at 4th Street was opened last week to relieve traffic at the Hwy 156-4th Street intersection.
Once Stage One is completed in the last quarter of 2024, traffic will be shifted to the new alignment created by the widening of the highways.
“So far, the impact to the community has been minimal because we are working behind the K-rail and not disrupting existing Hwy 156 traffic,” said Jim Shivers, Caltrans manager of public-legislative affairs. “Upon completion, this project will double the capacity of Hwy 156 from two lanes to four lanes for this section of the highway and that will improve the mobility through this section of the corridor for the years to come.”

The 156 Improvement Project will construct a four-lane expressway immediately south of the existing Hwy 156 alignment. It extends from San Juan Bautista at The Alameda and continues to just east of the 4th Street/Hwy 156 Business Route in Hollister.
Updates for the project are available here. It’s expected to be completed in fall 2025.
